Biographical Information
Painter Glenn Rudderow captures the landscape of southern New Jersey where he has lived most of his life. Rudderow attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and also taught there for 16 years.
It is Rudderow's goal to "demonstrate an understanding of nature, the world around us, and our place in it, and translate it into cohesive images with unique identities." He finds inspiration in the work of Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins. [Source: American Artist, March 2005]
Artist's Statement
"In painting as in life, it is my objective to experience, express and live the magic that exists around us. Sometimes it seems subtle, yet there are always deep and profound underlying currents which reveal its existence. I think about the hidden messages, symbols and ideas that transcend time and go beyond the surface of things.
My paintings reflect the cycle of the seasons, the forever changing light, the harmonies sung by plants, animals and insects in their intereactions with water, land and air. I try to capture the feelings that suggest the lives and spirits of the people that move through these harmonies. It is my desire to create statements which convey the passion and obsession I have for these things. To paraphrase N.C. Wyeth, 'one can only paint that which one knows even more than intimately, one has to know it spiritually.'
It is my goal as an artist to observe these things and create paintings and images which enable the viewer to communicate, experience and live these same feelings. "
Rudderow lives and paints in Hopewell-Bridgeton, NJ. He exhibits nationally at venues including: the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; National Academy of Design, NY; the American Watercolor Society, NY; the Noyes Museum, Oceanville, NJ; the Springfield Art Museum, Missouri; the Sherry French Gallery, NY and the Butler Institute of Art, Ohio.
Mr. Rudderow is one of four artists featured in the New Jersey Network, PBS documentary entitled "Bayshore Artists: A Sense of Place" released in 2001. He will be the featured artist in an upcoming film produced by New Jersey Network, which will deal with his life as an artist.
